Costco Fun Fact: Eggs
Costco sold an estimated FOUR BILLION eggs in 2016. That’s about 333 million dozen!
At an average price of $4 per dozen (recently) that’s over $1.3 billion just in egg sales. That’s not an eggs-act number, but just an estimate.
In 2015, Brad Pitt & Ryan Gosling publicly chastised the company for not transitioning to cage-free egg production quickly enough.
Costco has made egg-cellent strides in the last few years in its commitment to going 100% cage-free world wide.
Their USA farm suppliers are mostly cage free, while Mexico, Spain, France, & Iceland are completely cage free.
Costco announced plans to build a 50,000 hen cage-free facility in China. It should be complete in 2024. How egg-citing!
Costco sells both cage-free and free-range eggs.
In France, Costco also sells duck eggs.
A few eggs-tra fun facts about eggs:
- The main difference between Grade AA and Grade A eggs is the quality of the egg white. Grade AA eggs have thick, firm egg whites that hold their shape well, while Grade A eggs have slightly thinner egg whites. The yolk of a Grade AA egg will also be slightly higher and rounder than the yolk of a Grade A egg.
- Eggs are one of the most nutritious foods on the planet. They are a good source of protein, vitamins, and minerals.
- The color of an egg’s shell has nothing to do with its nutritional value.
- The yolk of an egg is one of the few foods that naturally contains vitamin D.
- The world record for eating the most hard-boiled eggs in one hour is 145.
- The world record for spinning an egg on its end is 54.19 seconds.
These fun facts are inspired by the new book “The Joy of Costco – A Treasure Hunt from A to Z” by David & Susan Schwartz. This is such an awesome book and obviously a lot of time, care, and research went into making it.
Pick a few up on Amazon (or you may also find it at your local Costco) and give them as Holiday gifts to the Costco lovers in your life.
