The Initial Change

Pepsi wasn’t always the star of the show though. The food court used to carry Coke products. But in 2013, Costco changed it over to Pepsi to ensure the price for their hot dog and drink combo meal would stay the same at $1.50. The former Costco CEO believed that keeping Coke would in turn raise the price of this combo meal.

Thankfully for Costcoholics everywhere, the price hasn’t changed since 1980, and doesn’t look like it’ll change in the future, unlike the Costco membership price, which has increased this past year.

But after a decade of Pepsi products in the soda fountains, Coca-Cola beverages are finally returning. The month-long rumors were finally confirmed during a January 23rd meeting with Costco shareholders.

Of course, shoppers have opinions on the matter. While many are excited to have their favorite drink back in stock at Costco, others are disappointed with the switch. In our recent newsletter poll, we asked shoppers like you what they think about the swap, and Coke was overwhelmingly preferred by almost 2-to-1. The change will not only bring Coke to the food court soda machines, but also Coke Zero and Diet Coke, and will replace Starry with Sprite.

Because Coke has a much higher focus on quality, meaning that each machine has guidelines when it comes to maintenance, syrup mix, and more to ensure consistent quality, it’ll take a few months for the machines to be swapped. According to Costco CEO Ron Vachris, Costco is planning on having Coke products ready at the food court this summer. So get ready to enjoy a delicious hot dog and refreshing Coke here in the next few months!
