The End of the Book Section
In 2024, Costco announced that it would stop selling books at most of its stores starting in 2025. While there are still some locations that may carry a few titles, nearly all Costco stores no longer have a book section. This was officially established earlier this year.
There were several reasons why the wholesaler decided that year-round book sales were no longer viable. The biggest reason was labor. Costco claimed that manual stocking was too labor-intensive and costly. Plus, it didn’t help that many of those who bought books were doing most of their browsing and buying online.

A Limited Time Return
But there is a light at the end of the aisle. Costco has brought back its book section, though for a limited time. The seasonal section appeared in late summer and will be staying in the wholesaler through December.
