These Blackout buddies charge up when connected to a wall outlet and when the power goes out they turn on and light up the area. Also the Eton Blackout Buddy doubles as a night light, flip the switch from off to auto, and when the lights the area is dark the bottom light turns on (like your typical night light) and brightens up the path. If you don’t want that function turned on simply turn the switch to off.

Hi. I bought a pair of these in 2017. Have been using one for about 18 months as a night lite and only recently plugged the second in (3 months). The second was in an area that rarely needed the light so I left it in and turned auto to off. The other day when we got up it was lite up (top light). and smoking from heat. Pulled it out and threw outside. Any other such reports? Stunk up the house and back section is melted.
Wow – scary! Haven’t seen this in store for a while so maybe (hopefully) they stopped selling them for good.
Wife came home tonight to find one of our blackout buddy’s was lit up. She pulled it out of the receptacle to find it very hot, had a burning odor, and a white residue on it. It was purchased at Costco last year.
Not good! You should still be able to take it back for a refund.
