How Many Costco Stores Are There in the U.S.?

Costco is one of the largest retailers in the world. And with countless savings and membership perks, it’s also one of the most popular wholesalers. Thanks to their always-expanding empire of club-access warehouses, they’ve been able to help families stock up on household essentials for years. 

But just how big is Costco? While they’re one of the biggest names when it comes to retailers and warehouses, just how many Costco stores are in the U.S.?

Does Every State Have a Costco? 

Costco is still expanding to this day, with the announcement of more than 30 new locations in 2024, a few being in Oregon, California, and Alabama. But even while they’re continuously growing, not every state has a warehouse. 

Out of them all, there are only three U.S. states without a Costco, and that includes Rhode Island, West Virginia, and Wyoming. 

But don’t fret, this doesn’t mean that you’ll have to miss out forever. Costco has been closing this gap quickly, and hopefully soon, one or more of these states will have a warehouse! 

Which State Has the Most Costco’s?

Other states are lucky enough to have multiple stores to choose from in their area. With an average of 14 Costco stores per state, some have exceeded that amount. 

The winner for most Costco stores in one state is California sitting at a total of 135 warehouses. Texas follows this with 38 Costco warehouses. Washington is close behind in third with 33 warehouses. 

The cities with the most amount of Costco warehouses include Phoenix, San Diego, and San Jose at 5. 

Costco’s Plans for Rhode Island

While there are no current plans for Costco to come to Wyoming or West Virginia, there are plans for Rhode Island to finally get their own wholesaler. Talk about Costco plans first came around three years ago, but was eventually scrapped over objections.

However this year Warwick’s City Council President, Stephen McAllister, is working hard to get the bulk retailer in his city. Providence Journal spoke about McAllister inviting Costco executives to the Northeast region to show off the beautiful town and encourage them to set up shop. Hopefully, Rhode Island residents will get their wish soon!

How Many Costco Stores Are in the U.S.?

As of February 2024, the United States has a total of 611 Costcos across the country. That means California homes 22% of these warehouses.

But out of the 30 new locations this year, approximately 24 are supposed to open in the U.S. 

Which State Has the Best Costco?

Every Costco has its quirks. But did you know there was a ranking for overall best Costco store? With how many Costco stores in the U.S., it can be hard to nail down which ones are the best.

Thankfully, Finance Buzz has done the work for us. According to their rankings, which rate the store by cleanliness, friendliness, inventory, quality of samples, the amount of samples, and even the parking lot space, the number one store is located in Cumming, Georgia. It’s one of ten warehouses in the Atlanta area, and earned the highest rating thanks to its welcoming neighborhood, the amount of samples you can indulge in, and the amazing stock.

Coming in second is located in Kansas City, Missouri, and then San Antonio, Texas, and finally Centerville, Ohio coming in fourth.

Which Was the First Costco?

Costco actually has an interesting history. While the very first Costco came about in Seattle in 1983, its history actually started back in 1976 when the first Price Club was built in San Diego, California.

Price Club was Costco’s biggest competitor, but in 1993, the two merged after Price Club turned down Walmart’s offer to merge their warehouse chain, Sam’s Club. When the two merged, Costco had already opened 17 warehouses nationally and moved their headquarters from Seattle to Kirkland. Since the merge, Costco has only grown.

Is Costco Only in the U.S.?

Thankfully, no! Costco is not only in the United States. While the U.S. has the most Costcos compared to any other country, there are several stores around the world. For example, Canada has 108 stores, Mexico has 40, Japan has 33 and the United Kingdom has 29. 

How Many Costco’s Are There Total?
