What Is Costco’s Executive Membership?

When shopping at Costco, you must have a membership in order to purchase its products. While some locations might let you wander around and check out the warehouse before purchasing a membership, you’ll need a membership or shop card — which can only be given by a member — to keep coming back.

That’s where Costco’s two memberships come into play: Gold Star or Executive. The Executive Membership is similar to the basic Gold Star Membership but offers even more benefits than the basic membership tier.

A big factor when deciding which Costco membership you want is the price tag. Most opt for the Gold Star Membership because it’s more affordable, sitting at only $65 per membership annually.

For an Executive Membership, the price doubles to $130 annually. While this might seem high at the time of purchase or renewal, you can pay yourself back in savings. Keep reading to understand the full benefits of this membership.

Let’s break down the Costco Executive Membership benefits so you can see why upgrading is worth it.

6. Monthly Instacart Credit

Costco has partnered with Instacart to offer even more savings to Executive members. This is a newly added benefit for top-tier members at the warehouse. The benefit gives Costco Executive Members $10 credit per month, valid on orders of $150 or more on either Instacart or Costco Same-Day Delivery, but not both. The benefit goes to the platform that is used first each month.

This benefit began on June 30, 2025, and was one that wasn’t talked about much. So, how do you use this credit? Executive members will need to go to the Same-Day Delivery website at Costco and sign in with their Costco account. From there, you’ll simply create an order that is at least $150, and the credit will automatically apply.
Please note that these credits do not roll over, so if you don’t use the $10 credit during the month, it will expire, and a new credit will take its place.

5. Exclusive Shopping Hours

For shoppers who love the benefits and savings of Costco but detest the crowded shopping days, you’re in luck. One of the best Costco Executive Membership benefits is that you can shop during exclusive hours. That’s right, Costco has started opening its doors earlier than usual, calling them “VIP Hours”.
The news was soft-launched on Costco’s website, saying, “As of June 30, 2025, exclusive earlier shopping hours for Executive members may be available at your local warehouse.” With that being said, the new hours are slowly rolling out amongst stores, so be sure to check your local store hours to confirm if they offer the new VIP Hours.

4. 2% Reward

Firstly, you can earn an annual 2% Reward on qualifying purchases at Costco, Costco.com, and even Costco Travel. The 2% Reward Certificate is mailed to you with the membership renewal notice (around two months before your annual renewal date).

This reward can be redeemed for most purchases through the front-end registers, excluding self-checkout. What’s great is that the reward doesn’t expire, so you can save up for a bigger purchase down the road. Ultimately, when we did the math, it’s clear that Costco pays you back for the membership cost if you spend $270 a month at the wholesaler.

3. Extra Benefits with Travel

When was the last time you took a vacation? One of the best Costco Executive Membership benefits lets you plan more trips thanks to their travel services. While Costco Travel is available for both Gold Star and Executive members, Executive members have the added benefit of earning more rewards. This goes for rental cars, hotels, and even flights and cruises.

Additionally, Executive members will have the option of seeing and earning exclusive extras on eligible packages. Thanks to this membership perk, you might find better deals than Gold Star members.

If that isn’t convincing enough, then just wait, there’s more. Gold Star and Executive members both have access to plenty of services that Costco offers, but Executive members receive discounted rates on specific services like Auto and Home Insurance, the Costco Auto Program, and Pet Insurance. Costco’s installation services can also be added to your annual 2% reward.

1. Free Magazine Subscription

It’s always nice to get free perks when you sign up for a subscription. Executive members receive access to a free Costco Connection subscription, a magazine specially made for Costco members. Gold Star members can access it online, but only Executive Members receive a hard copy shipped directly to their home.

Costco Connection is full of entertainment, spanning from trending products to delicious and seasonal recipes. Plus, you can even preview the samples that are around the warehouses. It’s the perfect inside look at all things Costco.

Is the Executive Membership Worth It?

When it comes to Costco Executive membership benefits, the real question is whether it’s worth it for you. This depends on your Costco schedule. If you find yourself going once or twice every month to buy a couple of staple items, like toilet paper or dish soap, then perhaps not. But if you find yourself there every week with a hefty cart, then it definitely is.

If you find yourself spending $3,250 or more a year at Costco, or think your groceries equal a similar amount, then it’s a logical move to pay for the Executive membership. If you spend that much, you’ll earn $65 in cash back, which essentially means you’re earning back the money you need for the upgrade annually.

Not sure if you’re going to spend that much in a year? No worries. You can always try the Executive Membership and then cancel at any time. Costco allows you to upgrade and downgrade with ease. However, if you end up downgrading before the year ends, you’ll lose all your rewards. This is because Costco will issue you a refund, so you won’t be losing any money when downgrading.
